Did you know more dogs run away on 4th of  July than any other day? The sound of fireworks triggers their nervous systems and they can become very anxious or afraid. Sadly, running away from the noise is a survival instinct for them. .

As 4th of July approaches, here are some tips to help keep your pets calm and safe:
- Make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day so that they are tired when the fireworks begin. Use this oportunity to spend quality time with your pet
going for a nice walk (making sure the temperature is cool and bring a cool coat as well)

- Keep your pets inside during fireworks, preferably with human companionship near by. If it’s hot, air conditioning will help.
- Play loud, but calming, relaxing music near your pets. The background noise will "distract" them from the fireworks.
- Provide a safe place inside for your pets to retreat. Talk and pet your dog every time you see a sign of distress. It's very important they feel your touch when they are scared.
- Make sure all your pets are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July. If your pet goes missing please contact your Animal Control Unit and your county Humane Society
- If you’ll be gone for the night leave your dog something fun to do, like a frozen favorite treat that may keep them busy for a while.
- Have few new chew toys to works as a distraction as well. Antlers are always an excellent option.

Bringing your pets to a fireworks display is never a good idea!
